The short answers first: Planet Zoo 2 has no real-time multiplayer or co-op — Frontier’s official FAQ says so directly — but it is far from offline. Franchise mode’s animal trading is online, and a new cross-platform Frontier Workshop connects PC and console players for sharing builds.

Here’s how each mode works and what’s confirmed about the online plumbing.

The three game modes

Career mode

Structured scenarios set within FEN — the Fauna and Ecosystems Network, the in-fiction conservation organization. The gameplay trailer is hosted by FEN’s chairman Eric and zoo operations manager Alys, who frame the career campaign. Expect the guided, objective-driven Planet Zoo experience, now extending into Wildlife Reserves.

Franchise mode

The connected mode: build a global network of zoos and Wildlife Reserves, and trade animals with other players online. This is the closest thing to multiplayer the game has — an asynchronous economy of players exchanging bred animals, as in the original, now with reserves in the loop.

Sandbox mode

Unlimited creativity, restrictions off. Self-explanatory.

“Multiplayer” on the Steam tags vs reality

The Steam page carries a “Multiplayer” tag, which has confused people. The official FAQ settles it: no real-time multiplayer, no co-op. Player interaction means Franchise-mode animal trading and sharing/downloading creations. Nobody walks around your zoo with you.

Frontier Workshop replaces Steam Workshop

Sharing runs through Frontier Workshop — an in-game (not browser-based), cross-platform hub where PC and console players share and download blueprints and full parks.

The upside is real: console players get full access to the community’s building output, which Steam Workshop could never do.

The downside is real too: no Steam Workshop section appears on the game’s page, and no traditional mod support has been announced. This mirrors Planet Coaster 2’s approach, and the PC modding community — which built a deep custom-content ecosystem around the original Planet Zoo — has already voiced its unhappiness. If PC-style modding matters to you, know that nothing announced so far supports it beyond blueprint sharing.

The Planet Zoo 1 question: saves and DLC

Two questions every returning player asks, and one honest answer for both: Frontier hasn’t said.

  • Zoo/save transfer from PZ1: no official statement; community threads asking about it have no Frontier reply.
  • PZ1 DLC carrying over: no official statement; community consensus expects it won’t, given the sequel’s rebuilt animals and systems — but that’s expectation, not confirmation.

We’ll update this page the moment Frontier addresses either.

Other online details

  • Cross-platform saves / cross-progression: not confirmed — only Workshop sharing is confirmed cross-platform
  • “In-game purchases” appears on the Steam page; no DLC roadmap announced yet
  • Denuvo Anti-tamper DRM is on the PC version — details in our PC requirements breakdown
  • Not announced for Game Pass or PS Plus

Planet Zoo 2 launches October 13, 2026. For what’s actually new in the sequel, see our new features overview, and for the growing species roster, the confirmed animals list.
